More on Using Blogs to Teach the Civil War

by fifer1863 on February 8, 2011

I have talked about Eric Langhorst’s Speaking of History podcast and blog in the past. While searching TeacherTube recently, I came across this video that he created about how he is using Web 2.0 technologies to teach a book that deals with the Civil War called Guerrilla Season by Pat Hughes.

Be sure to check out Eric’s website for some great information on how to use technology in the History classroom.

Hardtack to Harddrives

by Jim on August 16, 2009

Eric Langhorst, over at the Speaking of History Blog presented at the METC 2008 Conference on Hardtack to Hard Drives. The presentation is related to Eric’s use of the book Guerrilla Season in order to integrate blogs into his classroom.

What really got me thinking was how can you, as a classroom teacher, share your presentations with others. Eric’s use of Slideshare is a great way for you to do this or you can use VoiceThread which will allow you to add audio to your slides. This type of collaboration allows you to share information with others and bring others into your classroom. Perhaps you are doing a discussion of the same book and now you can participate with Eric. Are you reading another book and want to collaborate with others?

Another way for you to share what is happening in your classroom is via Ustream.tv. Ustream allows you to “Broadcast Yourself” and have others interact with you via a chat room. Eric recorded his NECC presentation on Web 2.0 in Social Social Studies with Ustream and now you can watch his presentation. Do you have someone coming to your classroom to present? Why not stream the event for others or even record it and share the recorded session. Do you have kids doing presentations then you can setup a private Ustream session and allow parents to watch. All you need is a computer with a webcam and a microphone.

How are you collaborating on projects? Let me know….

Podcast from Ford’s Theater

by fifer1863 on April 16, 2009

Eric Langhorst is an 8th grade American History teacher in Liberty, Missouri and runs the Speaking of History podcast and blog. Eric has some great resources on his website for using Web 2.0 technologies into the teaching of History.

Eric recorded the presentation of a National Park Service Ranger at Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC and provided it as a podcast for you to download. What a great way for you to have your students listen to this lecture and reflect on the event that occurred there in April, 185.

In addition to that Mike Lynaugh’s photography website has some great modern day photographs not only of Ford’s Theater, but also of the entire John Wilkes Booth Escape Route.

Use the photographs, the NPS site and podcast in combination to allow your students to experience the events of April 14-15, 1865.

Until next time…
