We had the unique opportunity to be invited to join author JD Petruzzi at the First Shot Marker that commemorates the start of the Battle of Gettysburg. What made it extra special was that we were there, on that spot where 150 years ago Marcellus Jones fired that first shot of the battle.
It was a beautiful here in central Pennsylvania last weekend so we decided to head to Gettysburg for the day. In addition to packing a lunch, we grabbed my copy of The Complete Gettysburg Guide and my Flip video camera and set off. As you know our family goal is to learn something new every time we go to Gettysburg and this time we learned several new things.
Here is the first of several videos and photos that we took. In this one, we are on Big Round Top and CJ is reading about the units that occupied Big Round Top during the battle.
Here is a video of my son CJ teaching us about one of the more popular sites in Gettysburg, the Eternal Peace Light Memorial. This monument is located on Oak Hill in Gettysburg. Confederate forces marched toward Gettysburg and the Union lines from behind the monument where CJ is sitting. The base relief is said to represent Peace and Good.
